3. Sausage Pizza Rolls

You will need:

2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 small onion, diced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Kosher salt
1 clove garlic, minced
One 15-ounce can tomato puree
12 pieces fresh basil leaves
Half a teaspoon chili flakes (or more according to desired spiciness)
Freshly ground black pepper
12 ounces Italian sausage, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan
1 pound frozen pizza dough, thawed and at room temperature
2 cups Italian blend shredded cheese

Directions

Start by preheating the oven to 425 degrees F. and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a saucepan, heat about a tablespoon of olive oil then add the onions and ½ teaspoon oregano and 1 teaspoon salt. Stir occasionally until soft. Add the garlic until fragrant. Pour in the tomato puree, 1/4 cup water, 5 torn basil leaves and the red pepper flakes. Simmer the sauce to a boil until thick. Season with salt and pepper then set aside.

In another skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil then fry the sausages until browned. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate. In a small bowl, mix the parmesan cheese with ½ oregano.

Divide the pizza dough into 8 equal portions. Flatten each into 4-inch square using a rolling pin. Spread a tablespoon of sauce on the flattened dough, add the Italian cheese blend, a small piece of sausage and 1 basil leaf. Wrap the filling with the dough and pinch the edges to seal. Place the pizza roll seam-side down and repeat. Brush the roll with olive oil and sprinkle grated parmesan and oregano blend before baking for 20 to 25 minutes. The remaining sauce will serve as the dip. Serve immediately.
